This article literally just blew the lid off my Wednesday. If you haven’t seen it, I’d skim it because it’s spitting some hard truth.
I’d be curious to hear the other…I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: It speaks volumes when a company’s founder is no longer representing the company they created.
As far as I can tell, Grenade has a current reputation for being a horrible product. They aren’t waterproof despite claims to be, they don’t keep your hands warm, and they fall apart pretty easy.
As for what I said above.. think about it. Grenade makes outerwear right? Remember Danny just recently signed with Nike to rep not only their boots but now their outerwear. Speaks volumes doesn’t it?
Plus upon googling “Grenade Inc.” or “Grenade Gloves” it seems that those at Grenade have been thrown under the bus before. Most notably here, where a photographer points out that he was NOT given payment for his photos that were ultimately used by Grenade. All arguments aside, scroll down just before the comments and read that last e-mail, yeah, Joe sounds like a true professional.
Turning back to the YoBeat article where they interviewed Matt Kass, a lot of the comments point out to “take this article with a grain of salt” but, if you carefully read all the comments there are some people who are sticking up with Matt on this one. It really leads me to believe that Matt is telling, at least to some degree, the truth about what happened. Why would one simply lie about being homeless and sleeping on a skate-shop floor?
It’s obvious that there’s bad blood in the Kass kamp and it seems like things are going to stay that way for a while.
With all the backlash going on online, from those in the industry, people complaining about a product that falls far short of expectations, and those snowboarding fans who are always watching, it should come as no shock to anyone that at only 1/3 of the way through 2011 and Grenade was tooting it’s own horn. Grenade proudly boasted they had a record number of people joining the “Grenade Army”— That would be 10,000 active paid members— as well as they were on track to have their most profitable year to date.
It’s a tough pill to swallow considering all the negative attention and their bad reputation but the brutal honest truth of the matter is this: As long as Grenade keeps producing a sub-par product and the product is sold in high-volume, easily accessible, mall stores such as PACSUN and Zumiez, there will still be people to buy it.
If Danny Kass was a smart individual, he would wrap “Danny & The Dingo” for good and return full-time as the head of the brand, the monster, that he helped create. Take that money and invest in Grenade, instead of flushing the profits down the toilet, and turn the company around. I wouldn’t hold my breath on that one though.
Hear hear!! (or is that here, here?)
Well said. And excellent points. I completely forgot about that photographer - I remember when it came out - it was all over twitter and a number of other known photographers backed up this guys claim.
What I also find telling is that Danny seems way busier within snowboarding this season than he has in recent past seasons.
